Yesterday I asked how you cut feed costs in piggery. Here are the three things that make a big difference: 1. Feed by stage, not one-size-fits-all. Piglets, growers, finishers and sows all need different rations. 2. Stop the wastage. A well-designed feeder, filled to the right level, can save a lot over a production cycle. 3. Buy ingredients smartly. If you mix your own feed, buy and store properly (dry, off the floor, away from rats) when prices are low. Please Note: Cheaper isn’t always better. Cutting corners on nutrition costs more in slow growth. If you’re unsure about your ration, get advice from an animal nutritionist.

It's been raining and we're in the season of planting. Here are a few things to check before going ahead with the decision to plant. Before you plant, ask yourself: 1. Have I tested or at least observed my soil? 2. Is my seed from a trusted source? 3. Is my spacing right for the crop? 4. Do I have a plan for weeds in the first 3 weeks? Good planting decisions save you money at harvest. Wisdom is principal!
